THE POPULARIZATION OF WINTER SPORTS IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC, AHEAD OF BEIJING 2022 WINTER OLYMPICS.

When Beijing won the hosting rights to the 2022 Winter Olympics, Chinese President Xi Jinping set out an ambitious goal, to get 300 million Chinese people involved in winter sports.

The Chinese government unveiled a plan, with the goal of developing the winter sports industry, that was almost nonexistent in China only twenty years ago, to a target size of RMB 1 trillion (USD 150 billion) by 2025, as well as bolstering the snow and winter sports culture among its people.

Winning performances at the Winter Games, which are normally dominated by European countries, USA, Canada and Russia, have become increasingly important for the image of Xi Jinping’s China, as the country projects itself on the world stage as a global superpower.
